When someone hears difficult or bad news, disbelief or denial can be a normal reaction. It takes time to absorb information and to understand fully the implications of an SCI.
Having a close friend or another member of the family to sit with you during discussions at the hospital may be a source of comfort and support, especially if that person is able to help you ask questions if you are feeling very upset.
