Although you may feel overwhelmed when you first hear the news, having a relative with a disability doesn’t have to be a barrier to having a productive and fulfilling life, even if things feel very difficult in the early stages.

It is possible that you will experience a wide range of emotions any of which are an entirely natural response to hearing bad news. You may feel apprehensive about your partner’s or child’s future and how you and your family are going to manage.

You may also have negative assumptions about the outcome of a spinal cord injury, in terms of the physical and emotional aspects and also in respect of employment, schooling and social lifestyle. You may even feel that your life has temporarily stopped.

“You will get over it in time but it is important to ask for help. Talking to others in a similar situation is important as is remembering to be kind to yourself”.
