Visiting the hospital

Travel costs

The cost of travelling to visit your relative may put a strain on your budget, especially as the majority of hospitals charge the public for parking on their premises.

Each hospital will have a different parking policy, but it is always worth asking about reduced parking costs; as in some cases, arrangements can be made for regular visitors to pay less.

SIA’s Relatives’ Travel Fund

The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) has a Relative’s Travel Fund which makes small grants of up to £50 per family. Each family may make only one application to the fund.

Advice on travel costs should be sought from your relative’s case manager who will, if appropriate, complete an application form on your behalf.

If the funding is available from SIA, a cheque will be sent to the case manager who made the application and it will be passed on to you.

If you are on Income Support, you may be able to get a community care grant from the Social Fund.
